NInth and Tenth (Horse) Cavalry
of "The Buffalo Soldiers" Remembers Trooper Robert
McDaniel
In December, our long-time member Trooper William Jones,
M/Sgt. (Ret) died at the age of 91. His wife predeceased
him by many years leaving to mourn his three daughters,
Jacqueline, Marilee, and Gwendolyn and son, Willie Lee.
His daughters have oftentimes accompanied him to the anniversary
reunions. When he joined the army, he was initially
assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He was also a POW during
the Korean Conflict.
BSGNCC would also like to send our deepest sympathies
to the families and friends of Troopers Floyd Brown, George
Fennell, and Joseph Flipper who recently passed. We extend
our sincere condolences for your losses.

Brief History of the 9th and 10th
The Black regiments which came to be known as "Buffalo
Soldiers" were formed by an Act of Congress published
in General Orders No. 56, War Department, Adjutant General's
Office, dated August 1, 1866.
|
The 9th Cavalry
The 9th Cavalry was formed in Greenville, Louisiana (now
a part of the city of New Orleans) on September 21, 1866,
with the authorization to raise one regiment of "colored"
cavalry. The new recruits came from Louisville, Kentucky and
were ex-Civil War veterans. Enlistment was for 5 years, with
recruits receiving 13 dollars a month, plus room, board, and
clothing. The motto of the 9th is "WE CAN, WE WILL!"
|
The 10th Cavalry
The 10th Cavalry was formed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on
September 21, 1866. Very high standards of recruitment were
set by the regiment's commander. By the end of July 1867,
eight companies of enlisted men had been recruited. The motto
of the 10th is "READY AND FORWARD!" |
