Brief History of the 9th and 10th
The Black regiments which came to be known as "Buffalo Soldiers"
were formed by an Act of Congress published in Genereal Orders
No. 56, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, dated August
1, 1866.

The
9th Cavalry
The 9th Cavalry was formed in Greenville, Louisiana (now
a part of the city of New Orleans) on September 21, 1866,
with the authorization to raise one regiment of "colored"
cavalry. The new recruits came from Louisville, Kentucky and
were ex-Civil War veterans. Enlistment was for 5 years, with
recruits receiving 13 dollars a month, plus room, board, and
clothing. The motto of the 9th is "WE CAN, WE WILL!"

The
10th Cavalry
The 10th Cavalry was formed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on
September 21, 1866. Very high standards of recruitment were
set by the regiment's commander. By the end of July 1867,
eight companies of enlisted men had been recruited. The motto
of the 10th is "READY AND FORWARD!" |
